In Good Company: Fredrikson Stallard
Patrik Fredrikson and Ian Stallard of Fredrikson Stallard founded their design practice in 2005. Among their recent work is the Gravity collection created to reveal a balance between the analogue and the digital. The Species II sofa from the collection has been shortlisted for the Design Museum’s Beasley Designs of the Year 2016.
When was the company founded? It’s difficult to give an exact date as the formation of Fredrikson Stallard was a very organic process. We met at Saint Martins in 1995 and gradually began working together from then. Our first show together was in 2003 and we officially launched under the name Fredrikson Stallard in 2005 at our solo show ‘Gloves for an Armless Venus’ in New York.
How many staff? Seven
Where is it based? Holborn, London
What is your latest significant achievement/project of note? Our current exhibition at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna alongside Ai Wei Wei.
What is your best-selling product? We work across very diverse platforms from product design and jewellery to edition and unique sculptural works. It would depend whether you consider ‘best-selling’ as being quantified by volume, financial statistics, or demand.
I’ve just discovered… The artist Helen Marten. We went to her show at the Serpentine Gallery this weekend and were infatuated by her meticulous attention to detail.
Who inspires me… So many people, events, situations but ones that spring to mind are Hofesh Shechter, J G Ballard, Paul McCarthy, Franz West, Jannis Kounellis, Hedi Slimane.
I’ve always been a fan of… Abstract expressionism.
My highlight of the last 12 months… Having our ‘Species’ sofa acquired for the permanent collection of San Francisco MOMA.
My next design trip is to… Brazil. It is our first time in South America and we can’t wait to see what is happening on the contemporary creative scene.
