Schemer Seven: Door Furniture

One of the small but vital details that point to good design, door furniture has been around for centuries but continues to evolve. Here’s a handful of our current favourites.

Continuing to unite the UK’s foremost designers and architects with door furniture design, ize’s latest recruit is Simon Pengelly. With him, they have produced the Slant handle with its feature swirled neck.

US hardware company SA Baxter produce project-ready door furniture with short lead times as well as custom made products, such as these oversized Centre knobs, which have just arrived at the Chelsea Harbour showroom.

The new, ergonomic handle by designer and sculptor Jean Nouvel for 100 year old Italian company Olivari, seems to take on the shape of its users hand when gripped. It is called Chelsea.

Brussels’ ironmonger Emery & Cie, known for its sturdy, handmade interior pieces, has produced Boule in solid copper, brass, cast iron and chrome. Emery & Cie UK stockists are Retrovious in London.

Established in 1820 Samuel Heath is a name associated with high quality British interior design products, including door furniture. All pieces are made in Birmingham, including this raised oval door knob with a rose design.

These nickel-knuckled horn handles by Ochre have been a consistent top seller since introduced. Ranging in length from 5cm to 35cm they can be subtle or statement and for drawers, doors, cupboards or cabinets.

Phillip Watts wowed the crowds at Decorex with its ballsy giant skull door handles. This is the smaller drawer handle design, which comes in aluminium, brass, bronze or hand set with Swarovski crystals.
