Schemer Seven: Wingback Chairs

Comfort seating: It’s the season for cosy evenings by the fire and what could be better to sit in tan a wingback chair? Here’s our choice of new stars and old favourites.

Fritz Hansen

Madrid-born artist and designer Jaime Hayon has created the Ro easy chair for Fritz Hansen, with his signature flamboyant and slightly anthropomorphic style. It is available in three traditional options (black, light grey and taupe), three bright (violet, blue and yellow) and three soft (light pink, sage-green and sand).

Each of the Alae Wing Chairs by Wiltshire-based ‘fine tailored’ furniture specialist, Stuart Scott, is hand signed and individually numbered. The sturdy, classic looking design has legs in natural oiled walnut and upholstery nails in copper. Shown here upholstered in 100% British charcoal wool.

3 James Bench_160

James UK

This bench style seat is James’ Norton wingback chair in a double dose. Brit company James are a contemporary design team using specially sourced hardwood and upholstery and traditional joinery techniques. Norton can be made in Oak, American Black Walnut or stained Beech, with the option of fabric or leather inside and outside.

4 JAB - Tribeca_160

JAB Anstoetz

Well known for its great, luxury fabric ranges German company JAB Anstoetz also produce a chic furniture collection, including Tribeca, a Japanese, minimalistic influenced take on a wingback club chair. It comes in rocking or non-rocking form. The designer is Andreas Weber.

Carl Hansen

Designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1960, the roomy and striking CH445 is still in production with Carl Hansen, and available through Viaduct here in the UK. Built around a solid beech frame with legs in polished stainless steel it is available in a choice of upholstery in both fabric and leather.

Max Rollitt

Max Rollitt has many strings to his bow including bespoke furniture maker, eclectic antiques dealer, interior decorator and is also the creator of the Wing Armchair. This is part of his small line of handmade pieces that are inspired by his favourite period purchases over the last few years.

Munna

The deco inspired cotton-velvet Cleo chair is by opulent Portuguese design house Munna, available through LuxDeco in the UK. The Munna team were aiming for a stylish hybrid of Arne Jacobsen’s iconic Egg chair and a traditional wingback and have finished it with a body-contouring backrest and deep vertical quilting.
