In Good Company: Martin Gill

Martin Gill joined And So To Bed, part of the Flex Bedding group, as its new managing director at the end of last year. Formerly the joint CEO of German kitchen company Poggenpohl, Gill is looking forward to finding out more about the bedroom market and is already planning new product launches – and even an ‘intelligent bed’.

When was the company founded? And So To Bed was founded in 1984 as a specialist in fine antique beds. When demand outstripped supply, we began to manufacture our own designs based on traditional pieces and opened our first shop, on the Kings Road in London.

How many staff? Our UK operation has 78 staff members, but as part of The Flex Group we can count over 2,000 employees worldwide.

Where is it based? Our flagship showroom is the Kings Road location, but our head office can be found in deepest Dorset – in a small village named Pymore, near Bridport.

What is your latest significant achievement/project of note? It has to be the opening of the Richmond showroom. As a company, we have been looking for the perfect location here for a long time – and this year we found it. It’s our latest location and it’s exciting to be a company that is still opening new retail spaces.

What is your best selling product (and how much of it do you sell)? And So To Bed is the largest retailer in the UK for Vispring mattresses and divans. We sell over 3,000 per year.

I’ve just discovered… How long it can take to get to Bridport in Dorset from London!

Who inspires me… My sons! Because of them I am always pushing myself, wanting to impress them and lead by example.

I’ve always been a fan of… My staff, because a happy team is the key to any successful business. The And So To Bed team is incredibly dedicated to delivering excellent customer service.

My highlight of the last 12 months… After just taking the helm, I’m more looking to the next 12 months at And So To Bed; there are so many tremendous opportunities for the future on the horizon… watch this space.

My next design trip is to… I’ll next be heading to meet our research and development department in Madrid, with the view to introduce new products to the range – including an intelligent bed.
