Claudio Luti is president and owner of Kartell Spa, as well as the chairman of the Salone del Mobile Milano

April 2019

When was Salone founded, and why?

The Salone del Mobile started in 1961 as a commercial fair to help a group of Italian manufacturers to export.

How many staff does it employ?

As in all companies there are many divisions: direction, commercial, marketing, administration, communication and press office, and then we have many people that work for us occasionally.

What do you like best about the show and why?

The emotion that design conveys. Salone del Mobile Milano creates new frameworks and hosts new creativity at each edition, because the important thing is that this event is not simply the leading showcase of both Italian and foreign furnishing and design, it also shines a light onto developments within the industry.

How has Salone changed since it started?

Salone del Mobile is basically always the same in its essence, although it has become more international and more than just a trade fair. It is a global experience that attracts professionals who are directly involved with the sector as well as people from outside the design business.

I’ve just discovered…

that Milan has been appointed the Best City 2019 in the Wallpaper Design Awards.

Who inspires me…

Young, promising, creative people, like the ones that for more than twenty years the Salone del Mobile has been nurturing at SaloneSatellite, the springboard for talented young people from across the globe.

I’ve always been a fan of …

Milan!!!! I was born, studied, married, worked and lived here!

It is an international city now made up of several different dimensions and its openness to the world and dynamism is projected in so many different ways.

Milan is the moral capital of a beautiful and culture-rich country – Italy – and has allowed its cosmopolitan character to emerge over the last few years.

My highlight of the last 12 months…

For sure the Manifesto of Salone del Mobile Milano launched in 2018: it is not just an affectionate gesture towards the city and all the actors that have contributed to its success, but is first and foremost a declaration of intent, laying the foundations for a new way of thinking, working as a system and designing.

How will you relax after the exhibition?

I like a lot skiing and sailing… I will choose where to go in the next weeks!
