Romo Design Director Emily Mould is proud of her family business and its Nottinghamshire roots. Here, she shares her joy of running and her admiration for Paul Smith
When was the business founded and why?
Originally founded by my great, great grandfather Robert Mould in 1902, Romo is a family run business now in its fifth generation. Romo started as a small-scale furniture manufacturing business in Nottingham and by the 1930s the company had become wholesalers to the upholstery industry.
How many staff?
The Romo Group has over 350 employees in the UK, US, Germany, Sweden and Holland. Although much expanded, Romo remains a family business and we wouldn’t be what we are today without the hard work and dedication from our fantastic employees.
Where is it based?
Based in Nottinghamshire, Romo has offices and showrooms in London, Europe and the USA, with exports totalling approximately 70% of sales. Our products are sold through a network of agents and distributors in over 70 countries.
What is your latest significant achievement/project of note?
We are incredibly proud of our January 2019 Black Edition launch. Comprising a fascinating collection of decorative prints and weaves, elegant sheers, sumptuous upholstery weaves and dynamic wallcoverings, this spectacular launch has taken an artistic journey through an exclusive collaboration with prominent Japanese artist Katsutoshi Yuasa. The end results are outstanding and it truly is a launch to remember!
We are also currently in the process of building a new head office and state-of-the-art warehouse in Nottinghamshire – it marks a huge milestone for the company, its employees and customers who will all benefit from the opportunities the new building will bring.
What is your best-selling product?
Linara, our brushed cotton linen union, has become an iconic plain renowned for its unrivalled spectrum of colour and continues to be one of our best-selling qualities. Now available in over 360 shades, Linara is the perfect interiors product as it offers practicality and durability as well as style and versatility.
I’ve just discovered…
Running! I’ve always enjoyed exercise but recently I’ve made sure that running fits into my busy schedule. Every morning I make sure I run, whether it be short or long. It gives me time to think, helps me relax and sets me up for the day. I’ve started to see it as ‘me time’ – something that’s a rarity these days.
Who inspires me…
As a designer, I’m constantly inspired by different people, whether that be related to design or in relation to someone’s work ethic and success. I can’t pin it down to one person, but as a design team we are constantly searching for inspiration from an array of sources, travel, exhibitions, artwork, photography and different cultures.
I’ve always been a fan of…
I admire Paul Smith for many reasons. Firstly, he’s a local designer who started in Nottingham, like us. Quality and heritage are at the heart of the brand, but his designs are energetic and inspiring. He also appreciates colour and uses it creatively.
My highlight of the last 12 months…
Our premier collection of Romo and Villa Nova rugs launched at Paris Deco Off 2018 and the reaction so far has been overwhelming. Over the past 12 months, we’ve loved to see how our rugs are used in creative ways within our clients’ own contract or residential projects.
My next design trip is to…
India, to meet with our suppliers. The country itself is beautiful and inspiring, so it’s always a worthwhile visit!
