News: Government advised to ban gas mains connection to new homes

March 2019: The Committee on Climate Change, an independent statutory body established under the Climate Change Act 2008, has published a report advising government to ban new homes from being connected to the gas grid in six years. The report, ‘UK housing: Fit for the future?’, calls instead for new homes to be heated through low carbon sources, have ultra-high levels of energy efficiency alongside appropriate ventilation and, where possible, be timber-framed. Other recommendations include retrofitting the 29 million existing homes with support from HM Treasury, by installing low carbon sources of heating – such as heat pumps and networks – as well as increasing energy efficiency measures such as loft and wall insulation.
