News: RIBA announces House of the Year winner

December 2017: Caring Wood by Macdonald Wright Architects and Niall Maxwell has won RIBA House of the Year 2017. The Kentish country home has been designed for an extended family to live under the same roof. The building interlinks four towers, connected by the roof that echoes the landscape. Using locally sourced handmade peg clay tiles, local quarried ragstone and coppiced chestnut cladding, it mimics the rural vernacular that is also inspired by the traditional oast houses of the area.  “Sustainability in architectural practice is expected,” said James Macdonald-Wright. “But I believe regionalism, craft and the interpretation of the vernacular are also important. I’m delighted that, in Caring Wood, they are being recognized.”
